She & Him - “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here”

I haven’t caught “500 Days of Summer” yet, but I think I would like to see an indefinite series of short videos featuring Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel being cute together.

You know I really love this movie and I hope people like it, because if not they can all go straight to hell.

Maurice Sendak, on Spike Jonze’s adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are

A ringing endorsement if I’ve ever heard one.

“TRON: Legacy” teaser trailer

When I was a young lad, the movie TRON introduced me to both the world of CGI and the world of migrane headaches.  Now Disney is set to update the fim with TRON: Legacy, and the little geek inside me is giddily stocking up on excedrine.

Did I mention that Daft Punk is doing the soundtrack?

Before “Sience of the Lambs,” there was “Manhunter.”  Matt Zoller-Seitz continues his analysis of the work of Michael Mann, this time breaking down the imagery that frames his 1980’s adaptation of Thomas Harris’ “Red Dragon.”

I just can’t get enough of these pieces.  Makes me want to go back to film school.

Looking back on the show’s signature themes, situations, and images, Miami Vice is so clearly set in Mann’s world that it seems a nexus point in his career. Everything he’d done before fed into it and nourished it; everything he’s done since reflects upon it, raids it, or builds on it.

I was in 6th grade when Miami Vice was a huge hit on NBC, and looking back, I can’t believe my parents let me watch it.  Even then, I recognized something deeper, more soulful about this cop show, even if I didn’t know what it was.

Now, Matt Zoller-Seitz clears it up for me with another 5 part examination of a filmmaker’s career; this time Michael Mann.  Parts 1-3 are up now, with 4 & 5 to be posted later this week.  These video essays are really tremendous.  A little academic, but I like that.  Must-see viewing if you’re a fan of Mann’s work.

At The Movies

This year for our LifeChurch.tv “At The Movies” campaign we decided to create some mockumentary shorts about a fictional film production.  Here are my two favorite pieces of the four; you can see the rest on the BlingBlog Vimeo page.  By the time we finished these pieces, I really wanted to make the movie.  Someday…

And just for good measure, here’s Bryan Clark’s animated promo.  I didn’t have anything to do with it; I just think it’s pretty kick-ass.

Another 24 Hour short from years past; this one is from 2008.

This film’s requirements: The theme “Public View/Private Eye,” the line of dialogue “Seeing is Believing,” and using a map as a prop.
