Sorry for the light postings lately (for the two of you who care). It’s been insanely busy lately, and doesn’t look to be lightening up any time soon. Hopefully it will all be worth it and I’ll be able to share some exciting news in the next few days.

Anyway, I’ve been rethinking the purpose of this tumblog, and I’ll probably be posting more often in the coming months. I just won’t be pretending this is a real blog. I started this intending to exercise my writing muscles, but then it just became a repository for fun and interesting things I found online. And I’m fine with that. I just need to embrace it. So I may be doing a rebrand down the line, maybe a layout tweak and a name change.

I may start a new, more substantial blog on my own site, but keep this going as well (check out Trish’s dual blogs in the friend roll for an example). I don’t know how it will all turn out, but I promise I’ll try to keep it interesting.

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys - “Empire State of Mind” from the 2009 VMA’s

I haven’t been able to get this song out of my head for the last two weeks. For all the flack MTV gets about a lack of focus on music, they really know how to create an epic televised performance (random stage-crasher notwithstanding). From the prizefighter-style intro, to the giant screen framed by fire escape balconies, to the shots of Beyonce marking out for her man, the production elevates a very good performance by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys into something anthemic. Makes me miss NY something fierce. Good thing I’ll be there in two weeks.

OKC’s local NPR affiliate KGOU profiled Matthew Alvin Brown today, leading up to Saturday night’s staged reading of “Rainbow Around the Sun” at Lyric on the Plaza.

Anyway, It’s a nice primer on “Rainbow” and a great reminder to reserve your seats immediately for Saturday’s show. Word is there are less than 75 seats remaining two days before the show.

A couple of weeks back we recorded another Worship Session for Church Online, this time featuring Trent Austin with Marcy Priest. We recorded three sets that will be rolled out over the next several weeks at live.lifechurch.tv.

Trent has always beena good friend and personal inspiration to me, and I’ve been wanting to do something like this with him for years. And I’m really happy with the end product, so it’s doubly satisfying.

The song performed here is “Healer” by Hillsong United, and includes pieces of “How Great is Our God” (Tomlin) and “How Great Thou Art” (Traditional).

“Looking back on the show’s signature themes, situations, and images, Miami Vice is so clearly set in Mann’s world that it seems a nexus point in his career. Everything he’d done before fed into it and nourished it; everything he’s done since reflects upon it, raids it, or builds on it.”

- I was in 6th grade when Miami Vice was a huge hit on NBC, and looking back, I can’t believe my parents let me watch it. Even then, I recognized something deeper, more soulful about this cop show, even if I didn’t know what it was.

Now, Matt Zoller-Seitz clears it up for me with another 5 part examination of a filmmaker’s career; this time Michael Mann. Parts 1-3 are up now, with 4 & 5 to be posted later this week. These video essays are really tremendous. A little academic, but I like that. Must-see viewing if you’re a fan of Mann’s work.
